Chapter Fifteen – The Academy

Holmes refused to be drawn into discussing the case any further until we had dined, and so our conversation turned to lighter matters. After a simple, though satisfying, lunch of cold ham, creamed potatoes, and custard pie, washed down with a glass of local cider, we set off for The Gardner Academy for Young Ladies.

β€˜It is but a ten-minute walk from the inn,’ Holmes assured me as we set off at a brisk pace. He was as good as his word, for within the allotted time we reached our destination. We had walked to the edge of the village where the road deteriorated into a rough dirt track which disappeared round a curve as though swallowed up by the moor. On the brink of the moorland, like a stately appendage to the village, stood a large Georgian dwelling set back from the road and separated from it by a small but thickly shrubbed garden. The building extolled the smart precision and symmetry of Georgian architecture, but the worn and scarred stonework told how it had borne the brunt of the harsh weather and the destructive moorland environment of fierce winds and howling storms.
